FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What size Caravan or Fifthwheel can I tow?

Following the towing law changes introduced in 2010, you can now tow a caravan up to 2.55 metres wide and 7 metres long (body only) with a tow vehicle rated up to 3,500kg GVWR. To tow a longer caravan, your tow vehicle must have a GVWR over 3,500kg.

When it comes to fifth wheels, the maximum width remains 2.55 metres, but the length limit increases significantly — up to 12 metres. This gives you far more flexibility and space while remaining within legal limits.

Always remember: never exceed your tow vehicle’s plated towing capacity or maximum trailer weight, as stated on the VIN plate or V5 document.

What driving license do I need?

If you’re towing with a UK pickup or tow vehicle such as a Nissan Navara, Ford Ranger, or similar, with a GVWR under 3,500kg, you’ll only need a Category BE licence — which is automatically included on all UK driving licences.

For those driving a larger tow vehicle with a GVWR over 3,500kg, a Category C1E licence is required. This was standard on licences issued before 1997, though some may include a 107 restriction, limiting the gross train weight (GTW) to 8,250kg. This restriction doesn’t apply to Category BE. However, if the combined weight of your tow vehicle and trailer exceeds 8,250kg, you’ll need to hold a Category CE licence.

What does the STT Group offer over their competitors?

When you purchase a new or used unit from the STT Group, you can do so with total confidence. Every vehicle undergoes a comprehensive 200-point Pre-Delivery Inspection, along with a new Gas Safety Certificate and Electrical Certification.

Each unit is thoroughly checked to ensure full compliance with current UK regulations, including CE-approved brakes, a mechanical handbrake, and a breakaway system — giving you complete peace of mind before you hit the road.

What should we look for when buying a Fifthwheel?

First and foremost, always ensure any caravan or fifth wheel you’re considering complies fully with UK road regulations. A reputable dealer should be able to provide all relevant approvals and official government links to demonstrate their knowledge and compliance.

Every caravan and fifth wheel should be fitted with a UK-approved braking systemnot American electric brakes that rely on a cab-mounted controller. It must also include a mechanical handbrake and breakaway system, with all gas and electrical systems properly certified for safety. Unfortunately, some importers cut corners by fitting USA-spec brakes or wiring 110V systems for 230V use — a dangerous and non-compliant practice.

At the STT Group, all our products come with CRiS registration and are in the process of gaining NCC (National Caravan Council) product approval, ensuring every unit meets the highest UK safety and quality standards.

Do you fit Fifthwheel Hitches?

Yes — we exclusively fit the new CE-approved Eurohitch fifth wheel hitch, fully certified for use in the UK and Europe. Unlike American hitches, which do not meet European safety standards, the Eurohitch offers complete compliance, superior engineering, and total peace of mind every time you tow.

Can we buy the tow vehicle from you?

Yes — we also offer a great selection of new and used pickup trucks, perfectly matched to tow your fifth wheel or caravan. In addition, we have exclusive partnerships with leading UK manufacturers, giving you access to brand-new vehicles tailored to your exact needs

Do you take part exchanges?

Yes — we’re always happy to offer part exchange on a wide range of vehicles, including UK, European, and American caravans, fifth wheels, motorhomes, cars, and trucks. We’ve even been known to take boats in part exchange — so whatever you have, we’ll do our best to make it work for you!

I am 70, Can I tow a Fifthwheel?

When you reach the age of 70, you’ll need to complete a medical assessment each year to retain your C1E category on your driving licence.

If you don’t maintain this category, you may no longer be able to drive larger UK, European, or American motorhomes. However, you can still tow a caravan or fifth wheel, provided your tow vehicle’s GVWR does not exceed 3,500kg.

Do you uprate vehicles?

Yes, we do. We uprate a wide range of pickup makes and models — increasing their GVWR up to 7,000kg, and in some cases, even higher — to ensure they’re perfectly suited for towing larger fifth wheels or heavy-duty applications.
