Thinking about a fifth wheel caravan for more space and comfort, but unsure what licence you need and how the weight rules actually work? You are not alone. UK towing law is clear once you translate the acronyms, and the right pickup and paperwork will keep you confident on both UK and European roads. This guide walks you through licences, key weight terms, real vehicle scenarios and practical steps to stay compliant. We also explain how The STT Group streamlines IVA, paperwork and driver handover so you can focus on enjoying the journey.
Are fifth wheel trailers legal in the UK?
Yes, you can tow a fifth wheel in the UK as long as the combination meets construction and use rules, lighting and braking standards, and the trailer passes Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) if required. The STT Group supplies many IVA-approved models and handles DVSA preparation for others, so you know where you stand before you tow off the forecourt.
Planning European touring? Your UK IVA and registration documents, plus insurance and breakdown cover with fifth wheel disclosure, are essential. The STT Group provides guidance on the documents you will need country by country.
What licence do you need to tow a 5th wheel caravan in the UK?
Your licence must match the weights of your pickup and caravan together.
Category B
If you passed your test in the UK on or after 1 January 1997, your B licence lets you drive a car or pickup up to 3,500 kg maximum authorised mass (MAM). From 16 December 2021, most drivers with a full B licence also have B+E rights automatically added on their photocard. If B+E is printed on your licence, you can tow heavier trailers within the towing limits of your pickup without taking a separate test.
B+E
Allows you to tow a trailer over 750 kg MAM with a vehicle up to 3,500 kg MAM, subject to manufacturer limits and capacity. This is the key entitlement for most fifth wheel combinations in the UK.
C1
Applies to vehicles over 3,500 kg up to 7,500 kg MAM, typically for larger vans and trucks. You would not normally need C1 for a pickup and fifth wheel trailer because the tow vehicle itself remains within 3,500 kg MAM.
Tip: Always check your photocard categories on the back of your licence. If you are unsure, speak to the team for a quick check against your intended combination.
Weight terms decoded, without the jargon
To match your fifth wheel and pickup correctly, you must understand four numbers.
- MTPLM: Maximum Technically Permissible Laden Mass of the trailer, sometimes called GVW for trailers. This is the trailer’s legal maximum when fully loaded.
- GCVW or GTW: Gross Combination Vehicle Weight. The legal maximum for the pickup and trailer together when loaded. Your pickup manufacturer sets this figure.
- Kerbweight: The pickup’s weight with fluids, no passengers or cargo.
- Pin weight: The vertical load of the trailer imposed on the pickup bed via the fifth wheel hitch. It is part of the pickup’s payload. Typical pin weight is around 15 to 25 percent of the trailer’s actual loaded weight.
Two more limits matter on the pickup’s door sticker or handbook.
- Maximum rear axle load
- Maximum payload
Your pin weight plus any cargo in the bed and passengers must not exceed payload or axle limits. Payload is often the pinch point with fifth wheels.
Practical steps to stay compliant on UK and European roads
- Confirm your licence categories
Check the back of your photocard. If B+E is listed, you are covered to tow within the pickup’s limits. If not, contact DVLA or seek training and testing. - Choose a suitable pickup, then match a trailer
Use the pickup’s GTW, maximum braked towing capacity, payload and rear axle rating to shortlist trailers. The STT Group advises on pickup and model pairing and can source compatible tow vehicles. - Calculate real-world pin weight
Estimate pin weight as 20 percent of your planned loaded trailer weight, then cross-check with the trailer’s spec and weighbridge data where possible. Add passengers, canopy, tools and bed liners to your payload calculation. - Check hitch, brakes and breakaway
A properly installed fifth wheel hitch, correct breakaway cable and compliant electrics are mandatory. Our workshop fits and inspects these to IVA standards. - Weigh if in doubt
A public weighbridge gives confidence on axle loads, payload and overall weight. Keep the printout with your documents, especially before a European trip.
